Janet said, “I thought I saw something, but I wasn’t sure, until Mom spoke up. Why are you worried about Milly, Dad?”

“I’m just tired of her having to take crap from Bruce. I’ll be glad when she can put him behind her.”

Janet replied, “I think she will be too. The more she learns about him, the less it sounds like she wants to be with him. I think she’s staying with him out of duty at this point. She thinks she owes it to him to stay until he feels better.”

“Sounds to me like she’s setting herself up for him to be dependent on her for a long time.”

“You mean, as long as she is being supportive, he’s going to need support?”

“I wouldn’t say it’s a sure thing, but it is something she should look out for.”

“I said something similar, and she said she’s looking out for that.”

I replied, “Gee, I’m worrying too much. That never happens.”

Nikki said, “It’s not that bad, Caveman. It just means you care about Milly.”

“Maybe so.”

Stella brought out our meals, and we dug in. After supper, we went to the cabin. Gus showed me the plane we had patched. It looked ready to try and fly again. He asked, “Do you think we could take it to the park, Dad?”

“I might be able to get an hour or so free tomorrow afternoon. Would that work for you?”

“That would be great, Dad! Are you sure you’re not too busy?”

“I have some important things to do tomorrow morning, but I should have at least part of the afternoon free. Mostly, we’re just waiting for a passenger we’re taking on.”

“Where are we taking them, Dad?”

“Oak.”

“The Squirrel capital?”

“Yep.”

“Why are we taking them there?”

“Because that’s where he’s from, Short Round. Why do you think?”

“He doesn’t have his own ship to go home on?”

“He probably does, but he doesn’t particularly want to go home. His family misses him, though, and they want to see him. We’re doing them a favor.”

Gus looked at me, and said, “I know I’m a little kid, and I don’t need to know the details, but that was weak, Dad.”

“Once we’re in FTL, I’ll be able to tell you more. That’s the best I can do.”

“I guess I’ll have to be happy with it, then.”

“I wish you could, that’s for sure.”

“I’ll try, Dad.”

I played with him and Becky until bedtime, and then Becky read to us. I kissed them goodnight, and found Snitz. We went to the grass room. Jim greeted me, and I returned it. He asked, “How are things, Boss?”

“Well, I guess strange would be the word, Jim. I’m not the most paranoid one in the fleet today.”

“How do you mean?”

“The captains seem to think that the Gene needs backup, if we’re making the run to Oak.”

“You don’t think so?”

“I don’t want to strip our defenses, when the Gene is perfectly capable of fighting her way out, if the Squirrels start something.”

“You think there’s going to be an attack, while you’re gone?”

“I think it’s possible, would be closer to the truth.
